She Trusted Her Daughter With Her Finances — Then Investigators Discovered More Than $500,000 Was Gone

Posted on November 7, 2026 By 4awg9

An elderly woman trusted her daughter with one of the most important responsibilities a family member can have: managing her finances while she faced serious health challenges.

But what began as an arrangement intended to help her mother eventually became the center of a criminal investigation in California.

According to the California Department of Justice, the daughter had been granted power of attorney to handle her mother’s financial affairs after the older woman was diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease.

Between 2013 and 2017, investigators found that the daughter transferred more than $100,000 from her mother’s bank accounts into her own accounts.

Authorities said the majority of the money was spent for the daughter’s personal benefit, leaving the elderly woman with almost no funds available for her ongoing care and medical treatment.

The investigation revealed that more than $500,000 had been stolen from the mother’s bank account.

The case eventually went before a jury in Placer County Superior Court. After a four-week trial, the daughter was found guilty of two felony counts of grand theft from an elder in November 2023.

The case highlighted a difficult reality: financial exploitation can happen inside families, sometimes involving people an older adult trusts most.

A power of attorney is intended to protect someone who needs assistance managing personal affairs. It is not permission to use that person’s money for personal expenses.

The California Department of Justice emphasized that financial abuse of older adults is a serious problem and that suspected exploitation should be reported.

For families, the case serves as an important reminder to pay attention to unusual financial activity, keep proper records, and make sure an older relative’s money is being used for their care and well-being.

Sometimes, protecting an elderly family member means looking carefully at the people who have been given access to their finances.
