Diane had never imagined that a stray dog would become part of the story of her greatest heartbreak.
Two years earlier, she had lost her beloved son, Ethan, just three weeks before his eighth birthday. Since then, every Sunday had become a day dedicated to visiting his grave.
But for the past year, something unusual had been happening.
Every time Diane visited the cemetery, she found the same dog sitting beside her son’s headstone. He was a scruffy golden retriever mix, with no collar and no apparent owner.
He never seemed interested in leaving. Rain or shine, he returned to the same grave, lying quietly as if he were protecting someone he loved.
Diane asked people in the neighborhood if they recognized him, but nobody knew where he came from.
Eventually, she began bringing him food and water whenever she visited. The dog accepted her gifts but never allowed her to get too close.
Then, one afternoon, everything changed.
While hanging laundry in her backyard, Diane heard scratching at the back gate. When she opened it, her heart skipped a beat.
Standing there was the very same dog she had seen at Ethan’s grave for an entire year.
But this time, he was carrying something in his mouth.
It was a small, worn-out stuffed rabbit.
The dog gently dropped it at her feet and sat down, watching her with a calm expression.
Diane picked up the toy with trembling hands. Its fabric was faded, dirty, and badly worn.
But as she held it, she noticed something strange.
There was something solid hidden inside the stuffed animal.
Something that definitely didn’t belong there.
Her heart began racing. She rushed into the kitchen, grabbed a pair of scissors, and carefully cut the toy open.
What she discovered inside would change everything she thought she knew about the mysterious dog.
